<br />The City <br /> <br />Location and Population <br /> <br />The City of San ,\¡Iarcos is the County Seat and principal corT,~nercial, ed~cation.al and recreatiú~al center <br />of Hays County located in the center of the State of Texas In the Austin statIstIcal metropolnan area, <br />approximately midway between the metropolitan areas of San 1\ntoOlO and AustJO, the State CapnoJ. The <br />City is located on Interstate Highway 35, U. S. The annual total precipitation is 3.5.6 inches. <br />Rainfall occurs in late spring and early fall. The mean length of the growing season (without freeze) is <br />254 days. San Marcos receives about 25% of the total possible sunshine annually. <br /> <br />Municipal Government <br /> <br />The City has a City Council/Manager form of government with an elected council of six members and an <br />elected mayor. The police department is composed of 43 city policemen and the fire department has 27 <br />full-time firefighting personnel and 23 volunteer firefighters. There are .3 fire stations, 3 engine <br />companies, I reserve company, one 6.5 foot aerial, and a swift water rescue team. <br /> <br />In 1983, the San Marcos City Council adopted the San Marcos Master Plan. This document represents the <br />goals and objectives of the citizens of San Marcos. These policies are used to effectively guide and <br />coordinate the development of the San ~¡\arcos community and to guide public officials in the development <br />of annual capita! improvement programs. This Master Plan encourages the public agencies to coordinate <br />their services in an efficient and economic manner and guide private development to those areas most <br />suitable in order to coordinate both public and private development efforts.
