<br />Educational Facilities <br /> <br />Southwest Texas State University, a full ~ year multi-purpose university, is located on a hill overlooking <br />the City of San \1arcos. It is easily identified !>y the castle-ik~ structure of Old Main which was the first <br />building constructed when the university, then a college, began operation in 1901. It became a university <br />en May 15, 1969, and new has an enrollment of 20,206 students from Texas, 48 other states, and 60 foreign <br />countries. The system has an estimated 1988 enrollment of 6,045. <br /> <br />The San Marcos Baptist Academy and the Brown School are 2 private educational institutes also located <br />within the City. Also located in the City is Gary Job Corps, a federal training center which provides <br />technical training and employs 635 persons. <br /> <br />Churches <br /> <br />San Marcos has 39 churches representing all major denominations. <br /> <br />Library <br /> <br />The City operates a public library with over 56,000 volumes. Southwest Texas State University Library <br />has over 750,000 volumes. <br /> <br />Recreation <br /> <br />Aquarena Springs and Wonder World, two of the State's top rated tourist attractions, are located in the <br />city limits. <br /> <br />The City maintains 7 public parks, consisting of eight baseball fields, 1 olympic size swimming pool, 6 <br />lighted tennis courts and various picnic facilities. There is also a private country club with a restaurant, <br />swimming pool, tennis courts, and an 18 hole golf cour~ which is open to the public. There is excellent <br />hunting and fishing available throughout this area of the state. <br /> <br />The following tax and debt information with respect to the City of San Marcos, Texas has been <br />included in the Appendix solely to provide a general description of the community served by the <br />Waterworks and Sewer System. The Bonds are special obligations of the City payable solely from the <br />Pledged Revenues of the System and do not constitute an indebtedness to which the full faith and credit <br />or taxing power of the City wiJI be pledged. <br /> <br />A - 4 <br />
