'.Ibe ~qosed land acquisition would be accommodated in three phases,
is shown in Figure 5.6, and is detailed in Table 5.2. The area
identified for acquisition in Phase I includes two areas as follows:
the old fuel storage area immediately adjacent to the existing
1'erDlinal area, the apron area including buildings 8-356 and the old
hangar identified as building 9-354, would be acquired as soon as
possible. '!his Phase I acquisition wa1ld encompass approximately 24.9
acres. This would permit the entire available apron area to be
maintained, as well as ensuring that important immediate needs for
facility e:xpansi.a1 are satisfied during the next 5 year period.

Pba8e II includes the area immediately north of Kane Avenue from the
east boundary of the existing Gary Job Corps Fire Station eastward to
Building 7-356. 'D1is would satisfy the probable need for locating a
second Fixed Base Operator and related aircraft storage facilities.
~ Phase II ~t:.y acquisition would encompass approximately 5.2
acres .

Pba8e III includes the area immediately north of Kane Avenue from
Bi1~ ldinq 8-350 to Building 8-352 encompassing approximately 6.8 acres.

Immediate steps to acquire the total 37 acres is recommended. This
will permit adequate lead time for the discontinuation of current Gary
Job Corps functions, and time to permit demolition, renovation, etc.
that would be necessary to restore the acquired property to aviation
p1rpOSeS. Based upon forecasts of activity and facility requirements,
the land area will be needed in the 1985-l988 time frame, with
significant new flight line facilities in place by 1988.

In view of the significant amamt of land within airport boundaries
that is not essential to airport operations, it is conceivable that a
land trade with the Job Corps Center may be feasible.

'!be implementation of this land use recanmendation will not require
significant changes to the airport operational character. No runway
or taxiway closures are necessary.

5.l6
