<br />DRYCLEANING AND LAUNDRY PLANTS <br /> <br />INDUSTRY OVERVIEW <br /> <br />The establishments <br />include: <br /> <br />covered <br /> <br />under <br /> <br />Drycleaning <br /> <br />and <br /> <br />Laundry <br /> <br />Plants <br /> <br />Retail drycleaning stores, <br /> <br />Industrial <br />operations, <br /> <br />and <br /> <br />linen <br /> <br />supply <br /> <br />plants <br /> <br />with <br /> <br />drycleaning <br /> <br />Leather and fur cleaning plants, <br /> <br />Self-service laundromats with drycleaning equipment, <br /> <br />Other establishments with drycleaning operations. <br /> <br />While not all of these facilities will produce hazardous waste, those <br />facilities using hazardous solvents may be subject to new Resource <br />Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) provisions regarding the <br />treatment, storage, disposal, and transportation of small quantities <br />of hazardous waste. These solvents include: <br /> <br />Perchloroethylene, otherwise <br />tetrachloroethylene¡ <br /> <br />known <br /> <br />as <br /> <br />perc, <br /> <br />PCE, <br /> <br />or <br /> <br />Velclene, also known <br />trichlorotrifluoroethane¡ <br /> <br />as <br /> <br />fluorocarbon <br /> <br />113 <br /> <br />or <br /> <br />Petroleum solvents, such as Stoddard, quick-dry, low-oder <br />and other solvents with a flash point less than 140°F. <br />(-140-F solvent- and other solvents with a flash point equal <br />to or greater than 140°F are not considered hazardous under <br />EPA RCRA designation. If you are unsure of the flash point, <br />check with the distributer of the solvent). <br /> <br />HAZARDOUS WASTES FROM DRYCLEANING OPERATIONS <br /> <br />Perchloroethylene <br />wastes: <br /> <br />plants potentially produce three types of hazardous <br /> <br />-Still residues from solvent distillation (the entire weight), <br /> <br />Spent filter cartridges (total weight of the cartridge <br />remaining solvent after draining), <br /> <br />and <br /> <br />Cooked powder residue (the total weight of <br />residues from diatomaceous orother powder <br />after heating to remove excess solvent). <br /> <br />drained powder <br />filter systems <br /> <br />-34- <br />
