<br /> Financial Institutions <br /> There are three banks located in San Marcos which had combined deposits on 9-30-85 of <br /> $202.454,927. <br /> Educational Facil Hies <br /> With a budget of over $11,531,000. the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District <br /> operates a highly accredited campus, including the kindergarten, four elementary (with one <br /> under cJ~struction), one junior high (grades 7-8) ~nd one senior high school (grades 9-12). In <br /> 1 985 the system had an estimated enrollment of 5.489. <br /> The San Marcos Baptist Academy and the Brown School are two private educational institutes also <br /> located within the City. Also located in the City is Gary Job Corps, a federal training center. <br /> Southwest Texas State University, a full four year multi-purpose university, is located on a <br /> hill Qverlooking the City of San Marcos. It is easily identified by the castle-like structure <br /> of Old Main which was the first building constructed when the university, then a college, began <br /> operation in 1901. It became a university on May 15,1969, and now has an enrollment of nearly <br /> 19,207 students from Texas, 46 other states, 2 territories and 25 foreign countries. <br /> Churches <br /> San Marcos has 38 churches representing all major demoninations. <br /> Library <br /> The City operates a public library with over 38,000 volumes. Southwest Texas State University <br /> Library has over 650,000 volumes. <br /> Recreation <br /> Aquarena Springs and Wonder World, two of the State's top rated tourist attractions, are <br /> located in the city limits. <br /> The City maintains five public parks, consisting of eight baseball fields, one olympic size <br /> swimming pool, six lighted tennis courts and various picnic facilities. There is also a <br /> private Country Club with a restaurant, swimming pool, tennis courts, and an eighteen hole golf <br /> course which is open to the public for a fee. There is excellent hunting and fishing available <br /> throughout this area of the state. <br />
