Box 12428 Capitol Station Austin~ Texas 78711 Dear Sir or Madam: I am taking this opportunity to, make you aware of my support of a grant application by the San Marcos Police Depa.rtment to fund a full-time juvenile law enforcetnent officer. It is my understanding that this grant will provide approximately $30,000 for the first year with the City Qf San Marcos assuming a larger portion of the financial burden foL the following years. f.t present, juvenile offenders l.n °che San Marcos area do not receive the comprehensive and specialized attention which a juvenile law enforcement officer could offer. These offenders are simply processed through the department and then fowarded to other agencies or authorities. A juvenile officer could serve .as the all-important link between the offender a:nd his family and the criminal justice system. Perhaps more importantly, a juvenile officer could serve the entire community by conducting educationai seminars and workshops in the schools and by providing young people with accurate facts and ormat.ion In areas such as drug and alcohQl awareness. These kinds of activities can only result in a decline In juvenile activity In San Marcos and the whole community will benefit. In these troubled times it is essentìal to address the needs of our children now if we are to pre~ent increased criminal activity In the years ahead. By dealing successfully with young people when they first get into trouble we show them that we care enough to help them through a difficult time in tDeir lives. And, that in itself is no small accomplishment. A juvenile officer would be a welcome addition to the San Marcos Polic.e Departmen't and to the comrnuni ty. I support this application wholeheartedly.
