STATE REPRESENTATiVE . DISTRICT 47
<"",-,-c:-
March 7, 1984
Governor's Office
Criminal Justice Division
P.O. Box 12428
Capitol Station
Austin, Texas 78711
Dear Sir or Madam:
I am taking this opportunity to make you aware of my support of
a grant application by the San Marcos Police Depârtment to fu~d
a full-time juvenile law enforcement officer.
It is my understanding that this grant will provide approximatGly
$30,000 for the first year with the City qf San Marcos assuming
a larger portion of the fina4cial burden fo~ the follolving years.
At present, juvenile offenders in the San iY!.arcos area do not
receive the comprehensive and specialized attention which a
juvenile law enforcement officer could offer. These offenders
are simply processed through the department and then fowarded
to other agencies or authorities. A juvenile officer could serve
-as the all-important link betvleen the offender ãnd his family
and the criminal justice system.
Perhaps more importantly, a juvenile officer co~ld serve the
entire community by conducting educational seminars and workshops
in the schools and by providing young people vli,th accurate facts
and informat.ion in areas such as drug and alcohol awareness. These
kinds of activities can only result in a decline in juvenile
activity in San Harcos and the whole community will benefit.
In these troubled times it is essential to address the needs of
o~r children now if we are to prevent increased criminal activity
in the years ahead. By dealing successfully with young people '.'ihe:1
they first get into trouble we show them that we care enough tc
help them through a difficult time in their lives. And, that in
itself is no small accomplishment.
A juvenile officer would be a welcome addition to the San Marcos
Police Department and to the coTIL:1èmi ty. I support this gr//t ;
application wholeheartedly.
, I
. /) I I f;/
. / I.. / -./ I
Sl:r;.ceJíely:// ,f' -' i.
/, L r¡ ¡-- 0>-"" 'r'/~ ' f
!
