<br /> GENERAL IriFORr1ATION REGAQOIi'iG CITY fiND ITS ECONOMY <br /> Location and Pooulation <br /> The City of San Marcos is the County Seat of Hays County located in the center of the State <br /> of Texas, imately midl'iay between the metropol itan areas of San .l\ntonio and Austin, the <br /> State Caoito. The City is located on IH 35, US 81, State Highways 80, 142, 27, 723 and Ranch <br /> Road 1 2. <br /> The City encompasses an area of 14.02 square miles with a September, 1983 population estimated <br /> at 25,000, up from a 1980 Census of 22,230. The annual total precipitation <br /> is 35.6 inches, Rainfall occurs in late spring and early fall, The mean length of the grow- <br /> ing season (without freeze) is 254 days. San Marcos receives about 26% of the total possible <br /> sunshine annually. The average January temperature is 65 degrees. <br /> Municipal Government <br /> Council-Manager form of government with seven council members. City Master Plan, Zoning <br /> Ordinances and Planning Commission are established. Thirty (30) city policemen, and ten (10) <br /> county sheriff patrolmen. Three (c) fire stations manned by twenty-four (24) regular firemen. <br /> Municipally operated ambulance service with emergency medical technicians.
