<br /> Southwest -exas State University, a full four year multi-purpose university, is located on <br /> a hill overlooking the city of San Marcos. It is easily identified by the castle-like <br /> structure of Old Main which was the first bui1ding constructed when the university, then <br /> a college, began operation in 1901. It became a university on May 15, 1969, and now has <br /> an enrollment aT nearly 16,000 students from Texas, 46 other states, 2 territories and 25 <br /> foreign countries, <br /> Churches <br /> San Marcos has 38 churches representing all major denominations. <br /> Library <br /> The City operates a public library with over 38,000 volumes. Southwest Texas State Uni- <br /> versity Library has over 650,000 volumes. <br /> Recreation <br /> Aquarena Springs and Wonder World, two of the 5tate's top rated tourist attractions, are <br /> located in the city limits. <br /> The city maintains 5 public parks, consisting of 8 baseball fields, one olympic size swimming <br /> pool, 6 lighted tennis courts and various picnic facilities. There is also a private Country <br /> Club with a restaurant, swimming pool, tennis courts, and an l8-hole golf course which is <br /> open to the public for a fee, There is excellent hunting and fishing available throughout <br /> this area of the state. <br /> -26- <br />
