RESOLUTION NO. 2007- 169 R <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SAN MARCOS, TEXAS SUPPORTING LEGISLATIVE <br />ACTION TO INCREASE FUNDING FOR THE TEXAS <br />DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FOR THE REPAIR <br />AND REHABILITATION OF CRITICAL HIGHWAY <br />INFRASTRUCTURE. <br />WHEREAS on August 1, 2007, one of the bridges spanning the Mississippi River <br />between Minneapolis and Saint Paul Minnesota collapsed; and, <br />WHEREAS subsequent investigation indicated that for nearly a decade this <br />bridge was known to be functionally obsolete and in need of repair; and, <br />WHEREAS, recent studies have shown that approximately 26% of the bridges in <br />the Unites States are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete; and, <br />WHEREAS funding for the repair and rehabilitation of highway infrastructure <br />funding has not kept pace with need; and, <br />WHEREAS a competent highway system is critical to the health and safety of the <br />citizens of San Marcos and the State of Texas; and, <br />WHEREAS, a competent highway system is critical to the economic well being of <br />San Marcos and Texas Economy. <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS: <br />PART 1. The City Council of the City of San Marcos, Texas supports legislation <br />that would increase funding to the Texas Department of Transportation and other <br />agencies for use in repairing and maintaining critical highway infrastructure. <br />PART 2.
