<br />RESOLUTION NO. 2007- 171 R <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SAN MARCOS, TEXAS SUPPORTING LEGISLATIVE <br />ACTION TO CREATE PROGRAMS AND PROVIDE FUNDING <br />FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION <br />INCLUDING RELOCATION OF FREIGHT RAIL LINES. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, transportation in Texas comprises 15-170/0 of the gross state <br />product and employs 11 % of the total state workforce; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in its present state the transportation system in Texas is a major <br />consumer of natural resources and a major source of air, water, and noise pollution; <br />and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the congested transportation system creates approximately $60.8 <br />billion dollars in added costs; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the present transportation system affords only limited access to the <br />poor, elderly and persons with disabilities; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Central Texas 1-35 corridor is one of the fastest growing areas in <br />the Texas; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the present system of inter-city freight rail lines adds to the traffic <br />congestion and hampers efforts to develop a centralized, inter-city commuter rail line; <br />and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the creation of a centralized, inter-city commuter rail line will address <br />some of the critical transportation issues facing the 1-35 corridor; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, failure to address critical transportation needs will hamper economic <br />stability in the State. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFOR BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS: <br /> <br />PART 1. The City Council of City of San Marcos, Texas, supports legislative <br />action that would create and fund a programs that would enhance public transportation <br />in the State, and particularly along the 1-35 corridor. <br /> <br />PART 2. The City Council of the City of San Marcos, Texas, supports legislative <br />action that would provide funding and assistance for the relocation of freight rail line and <br />the creation of inter-city commuter rail lines. <br /> <br />PART 3. This Resolution is in full force and effect from and after its passage. <br />
