<br />RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION <br />I. No/Low Cost Strategies for Remainder of FY 88-89 <br />A. Make water-saver kits available to every utility customer <br />(Door to door kit distribution completed by Boy Scouts, Aug. 1, <br />1 989). Target apartment dwellers and multi-family units. <br /> B. Continue public service announcments on radio and <br />newspapers. <br /> C. Set up telephone hotline for citizen input. (Trial run of <br />this was held week of July 17-21; response was low.) <br /> D. Continue weekly reports from City Hall on aquifer levels, <br />water consumption and rainfal amounts. <br /> E. Make the Water Conservation Task Force a permanent city <br />commission for on-going conservation efforts and water-related <br />issues. <br />II. Proposed Items for FY 89-90 Budget <br /> A. Print on-line water saving tips on water bill every <br />month; four times a year put bill in envelope with conservation <br />information. <br /> B. Budget $10,000 for the development and distribution of <br />brochures, pamphlets on water conservation and related topics. <br /> C. Hold a Xeriscape workshop at the Fish Hatchery, upon the <br />completion of the demonstration garden. <br /> D. Organize a speaker's bureau of knowledgable people in the <br />field of water conservation to speak to civic clubs and other <br />organizations. <br /> E. Instigate a low water consumption incentive program next <br />Spring. <br /> F. Have an information booth at the Business Expo this <br />October. <br />III. Long Term Planning Strategies and/or CIP Projects <br /> A. Work with school district to develop water conservation <br />curriculum for each grade. <br /> 1. Assess current water conservation curriculum at al <br />grade levels. <br /> 2. Complile, distribute and utilize a variety of resources <br />to develop understanding of the importance of water in our lives <br />and promote water conservation: <br /> a. written materials <br /> b. films and other audio-visuals <br /> c. speakers, classroom demonstrations <br /> d. field trips to local faciltiies <br /> 3. Provide in-service for teachers <br /> 4. Coordinate efforts with city and staff (public works, <br />etc) SWTSU, and EUWD to further education: <br /> a. staff available to speak to students and provide <br />statistical information <br /> b. provide classroom demonstrations <br /> c. faciltiies available for tours (ex. water treatment <br />plant) <br />
