.~ <
. ,~ P Juø- )~~ '1t:;J ~ - 7a
~~ I - 7t,
~~ For Diana - ~ ~~ .
About the picture at fountain taken Octìber 21
More Information (background, facts --stziff) than you will propablj..care to read about the
The project to erect security lights along the San Marcos River Walk ----
sponsored by the Heritage Association of San Marcos the summer of 1993.
Bob Sappington president
The project to further enhance the River Walk, (identified" San Marcos River
Walk of Texas" because it recaeived a federal gramt of $10,000 from the national Bicentennial
.
, Commission) the City's Parks and Recreation department director Rodney Cobb suggested
I
\ completing the erection of lights all along the River Walk. This was coordinated by Bill Daniels
'-
working with Jim Hull of Widelite and Frances Stovall of the River Beautification Committee who
was the San Marcos Bicentennial Commission Chairman 20 years ago when the project began.
The lights are the "cadillac" of fixtures produced by Wide-Lite. (or something like that!)
In observation of this further improvement to the River Walk, a ceremony will be
held Novermber 12 at the fountain in Veramendi Plaza. A new bronze plaque embossed with the
River Walk logo. will be placed. This is in honor of both the 20 years of the beginning of the
River Walk and an observation of the 200th birthday of Stephen F. Austin. (Heritage
organizaitons in TexLIS have been encouraged to observe his birthday.). Austin touched in the
vicinity of San Marcos when he was escorted by Juan Veramendi , on authorization of the new
Repubilc of Mexico, from Nacogdoches to Bexar (San Antonio.) The ceremony will take place at
5 p.m. sponsored by the River WalkJPark Beautification Committee of the Heritage Association of
San Marcos and will be followed with refreshements in the Bicentennial Room. The public is
invited.
, To augment funding from the The Heritage Association memorial endowment
,
fund, bake sales were held each Friday during June and July in connection with Friday lunches.
,
The endowment fund was set in place for the River Walk and most of the money has come from
memorials made to the memorial grove. The money may only be used for the grove, the parkland
and the River Walk.
Additional contrtibutions this summer came from many of those who have long
been associated with "beautification along the river" when the River Walk was constructed
beginning in 1973 as a nationally recognized "improvement to the environment" under the San
Maracos Bicentennial Commission.
At the time, the first two lights were obtained from Wide Lite. Later Wide-Lite,
as Broze Lite, approached the Heritage Association, which evolved from the City's Bicentennial
Commision , with the offer to rmke the fountain in Veramendi Plaza operable by installing a
complete new system as a contribution during the Sesquicentennial of Texas.(This cost $10,000)
Thus they will be given special recognition at the November 12 ceremony.
