October 13. 1993 <br />Report to the City Council <br />From : Frances Stovall & Helen Van Gundy, Laision Committee <br />This report from the Heritage Association is to show coordination of care of the Charles S. <br />Cock House Museum with Td e Parks and Recreation Department of the City of San Marcos and to <br />detail how Cottage Kitchen luncheon funds are used CO benefit the Cit%*. <br />To put the focus on the construction of the San Marcos River Walkway of Texas <br />the Heritage Association launched in .ianuarv mdnthl%- events to celebrate its 25th Anniversarc. <br />Preservation supported by the Heritage Association these past 25 years became a center focus as <br />%,e11. <br />Construction of the `Falk-way created a "people place" in the new parkland along the <br />formerll; inaccessable west bank of our scenic river. That term, "our scenic river," was used again <br />and again as that project moved along 2-5 dears ago uniting all facets of the city,- in a cooperative <br />effort. The path progressed through 1973-19/6 as the City's Bicentennial Commission became the <br />Heritage Association of San Marcos. <br />The HASM's Annual meeting and Election of Officers held last week-in the City's Activity <br />Center was truly fabulous. Amanged?for the evening %vas an exhibit recalling the time San Marcos <br />became a National Bicentennial City in 1975, named among the first seven in the nation. <br />This report tonight is an opportunity. to outline positive things that have happened in San <br />Marcos through the leadership and impetus of the Heritage Association during 1993. <br />The organization was, honored once again b?, . the Teas Historical Commission. In April <br />for the Sth %ear we were awarded the Distinguished Service Award for 1997. Since the DSA was <br />opened to Historic Preservation organizations San klarcos has received the award each vear, and is <br />one of onv two Preservation organizations in Texas presently receiving the honor from the THC. <br />The visibility,- of San Marcos has been enhanced through sates of a cookbook Twent-v Years <br />in the Cottn;e Kitchen , one of our primary sources of income. We have the boot: in 43 stores <br />from Houston to Wimberlev, and from San :Marcos to Seguin, New Braunfels, Lockhart, Goliad, <br />Kyle, Buda and Austin. <br />The cookbook is actu_aiv sold in more outlets in Houston and Austin than in San .Marcos: <br />There are six outlets in Houston and eight in Austin. We are proud to have the book in Austin at <br />Whole Foods, Book People, Breed's in both the Westlake and downtown stores, Scion Hospital, <br />Callahan's General Store, Congress Avenue Book Store. In New Braunfels the book is sold b%- <br />Rip Griffin's, The Collection, Bruestedts, The Smokehouse, and Accents Gift Shop. <br />Schulenber2 sells the Cookbook at The Flower Shop, Tejas Gift Shop, Oak Ridge Smoke <br />House. It is sold in Columbus at Schoebel's Restaurant, in La Grange at the Bon Ton Restaurant: <br />Old Nlain Book Shop in Bastrop. We are welcomed, and admired for our dresses and aprons from <br />the Cottage Kitchen as we do 'Samplings", serving as ambassadors for San Marcos. <br />Half of that income c:armed by the Cottage Kitchen luncheons is obligated for care of the <br />building and its surrounding cark land. The income from the Friday luncheons for fiscal near <br />October to September totaled 59,937. Operating expenses amounted to 32,907. The net re?-cnue <br />for the Heritage Association fTom luncheons was S7, 031. The Heritage of San tMa- rcos, Inc. has <br />spent the following amounts for improvments, repairs, and for equipment for the house, and in <br />response to worthwhile local ci?'ic requests. <br />Gazebo repairs S 6, 62".56 <br />Landscaping and plants 1, 351.00 <br />Arbor Day Tree Planting 57_1.S_ S 8, 5418.=10 <br />Siahts and Sounds of Christmas, 1,000.00 <br />Preservation Associates, LB1 tuseum.
