ENVIRONMENTAL
The City of San Marcos is home to many key natural resources. The San Marcos and Blanco
Rivers, their tributary creeks, and the Edwards Aquifer run throughout much of the City.
Abundant natural resources create a diverse wildlife habitat. Native birds, salamanders, aquatic
life and other species also live in these areas.
Several parks and historical features offer additional character and depth to the City.
Caution and careful planning are needed when evaluating infrastructure improvements so
that impacts to environmental features can be avoided or minimized.
Flooding and low water crossings must also be taken into account when considering
environmental constraints and impacts. The unique water features, combined with steep
topography, contribute to San Marcos being particularly susceptible to flooding. Major floods
have occurred several times in the past 100 years, with the most recent in 2017.
