Amount Requested: $5,000 Commission on Children and Youth Recommendation: $2,610 <br />Texas State University—School of Art & Design <br />Families Learning Together (FLT) —This proposal supports FLT'S 2019 summercodi ngcamp at Centro Cultural Hispano <br />de San Marcos/Arts pace, summer and fal12019 family codi ng workshops atthe San Marcos Public Library, and fal12019 <br />afterschool codi ng cl ubs at SMCISD elementary schools. Each series of activities focuses on building computer codi ng <br />skills for children and families in San Marcos. <br />How they will measure program success: As a digital inclusion projectthat builds computational fluencies for kids and <br />families in San Marcos, FLT will measure success in 2019 by recordingthe numberoffirst-ti me partici pants whojoin FLT <br />eve nts i n comparison with the numbe rof returni ng participants. Another measure of success wi II b e the digital artifacts <br />participants make -the computational stories, games, and artworks. The increasing ability, confidence, and joy that <br />participants experience will be documented and shared throughoutthe SM learning community and beyond (e.g., on <br />social media, in journal articles, and at conferences). <br />Priority Areas that this program will fulfill: Teaching children to program computers for expressive and meaningful <br />purposes addresses Goal 3 of the Youth Maste r Plan because ed ucating forcomputational fl uency in high school and <br />beyond must begin inthe early years. To strengthen and sustain higher STEM and CS high school graduation rates, and <br />to promote students' educationaltrajectories into college, which will lead to longterm increases in career readiness and <br />higherwages in San Marcos, FLT's family and child centered approach bui Ids contextual support for continued leami ng. <br />By broadening its base in the community, FLTstrengthens computercoding skills for individual participants with the <br />follow-on effect that gains in self-efficacy and self -empowerment spread to families as well. FLTworks from the <br />proposition that when evelyone learns together, communities engage more meaningfully with the tools of computer <br />science. <br />Goals for the program: The ove rarchi ng goal in 2019 is to expand FLT'S reach in San Marcos. From summerthrough fall <br />2019, FLT will offercodingworkshops to children and theirfamilies across multiple venues in San Marcos, including <br />Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos/Artspace, the San Marcos Public Library, elementary schools atSMCISD, and <br />summerart camp at Texas State University. FLTwiII run 2 one-week summer camps at Centro/Artspace and TXSTSchool <br />of Art & Design; 15 family codingworkshops atthe SMPL, and 4 afterschool coding clubs at SMCISD elementary schools. <br />This represents significant expansion compared to previous years. Based on 2018 participation rates, FLTforecaststhat <br />itssummercamps, workshops, and afterschool coding clubs will reach approximately 500 children and theirfamilies. <br />Youth Initiative grant funds wil I be used to pay stipends to Texas State University undergraduatefaci litators who will <br />organize and teach at FLT events; art materials; and light refreshments atthe public showcases at the conclusion of <br />camp and afterschool sessions. <br />How will they know they metthese goals: We will knowthat our goals are being met based on participation rates atthe <br />various FLT events throughout the funding year, includingend -of-session public showcases where participations invite <br />family and community members to celebrate the stories, games, and artworks thatthey have made in theirworkshops. <br />Number of clients served yearly: Approx. 330 Number of direct clients served ONLY in San Marcos: 330 <br />Amount Requested: $5,000 Commission on Children and Youth Recommendation: $1,180 <br />Texas State Universitv. Deoartmentof Health and Human Performance <br />Fun & Fit 4 Life— The Fun & Fit Life Program (FF4L) provides innovative experiences and activities in physical activity - <br />based positive youth developmentto children living in low income households or attending local Boys and Girls Club <br />after-school programs in the San Marcos community. Positive outcomes include increased physical competence and <br />increased personal and social responsibility (e.g., helping and respecting others, setting goals). The program aligns with <br />goal GOAL 2 of the Priority Areas in the Youth Master Plan - All children are physically and mentally healthy. Funds will <br />also allow us to continue to implement this program and evaluate program effectiveness. The program is partof service <br />
