Historical Context <br /> Though San Marcos is known for the San Marcos <br /> River,Texas State University, and the San Marcos <br /> Outlet Malls,the City also has an extensive history <br /> that dates back to pre-European times.Archaeology <br /> shows that the area around Spring Lake has been <br /> continuously inhabited for over 13,000 years. <br /> In 1812, floods and Native American raids <br /> destroyed the civil settlement of San Marcos de <br /> Neve near the San Marcos River. <br /> The land that <br /> the was onceheadwaters partof of the Spanish land <br /> 1832 <br /> grant becomes what is known today as San Marcos. <br /> Juan Martin de Veramendi becomes colonial <br /> governor. <br /> 1835 The San Marcos area was first settled in 1835. <br /> Settlers used the reliable water flow topower gins <br /> and mills. <br /> 1848 On March 1, 1848, Hays County was organized by <br /> the Texas Legislature.
