Character of the City <br />Recreation <br />The clear, spring-fed waters of the San Marcos <br />River stay at a consistent 72 degrees year around <br />and provide numerous recreational opportunities, <br />paddle boarding. Fishing, swimming, and snorkeling <br />are some other activities enjoyed by residents and <br />visitors alike, with the various parks along both sides <br />of the river creating a relaxing atmosphere and <br />protecting it from further development. <br />Downtown <br />Downtown San Marcos boasts the historic Hays <br />County courthouse, as well as many locally owned <br />gift shops, art galleries, unique restaurants, bistros, <br />and nightspots. The charming historic square is listed <br />numerous events throughout the year, such as the <br />annual Downtown San Marcos Trick or Treat and the <br />weekly Farmers Market. <br />History <br />Constructed in 1846 by Dr. Eli T.
