<br />2. <br />Regular Meeting <br /> <br />May 20, 2002 <br /> <br />Page 2 <br /> <br />for funding to purchase the Cephas House to create the Eddie Durham <br />Heritage Park and Museum. She also stated the San Marcos Area Art Council <br />applied for funding to expand their art programs. She stated she feels <br />both of these funding requests are essential to the community and <br />encourages Council to provide some funding for both projects. 4) Richard <br />Gachot stated he represents the Calaboose Museum and wished to speak on <br />Item 22, regarding CDBG funding. Mr. Gachot stated the acquisition of the <br />Cephas House is essential to the Eddie Durham Jazz Park and Museum. He <br />encouraged Council to provide CDBG funding for this important project. 5) <br />Kyev Tatum stated he represents NAACP, Christian Fellowship Union, Boys <br />and Girls Club and San Marcos Preparatory School and wished to speak on <br />Item 22, regarding CDBG funding. He stated the groups he represents wish <br />to develop a Youth Development Complex and they are requesting $350,000 of <br />the CDBG funding. The funding they receive would be used to apply for a <br />matching funds grant. The total funding would then go towards serving <br />over 250 kids and the development of a Boys and Girls Club. Mr. Tatum <br />encouraged Council to provide funding for this project. 6) Corina Jaimes <br />stated she represents the Community Action Center and wished to speak on <br />Item 22, regarding CDBG funding. She stated she thinks the CDBG funding <br />should be used to benefit low-income people and that Community Action has <br />applied for funding. She stated this funding would be used to pave the <br />parking lot and fix the ADA railing at the center which is a City owned <br />building, located at 611 MLK. 7) Michael Mercado stated he is a resident <br />of Sunset Acres and wished to speak on Item 22, CDBG funding. He stated <br />he feels the Council should provide CDBG funding for repairs on low-income <br />homes. Many of these homes are not air conditioned or heated and these <br />repairs would provide a better life for these citizens. <br /> <br />Mayor Chiu introduced for consideration approval of two appointments to <br />the Human Services Advisory Board. Mr. Mihalkanin moved to appoint David <br />Fleming for the at-large member and Ms. Tatum moved to appoint Helen <br />Franks for the at-large member and Sonya Lopez for the non-voting member. <br />On roll call the following vote was recorded: <br /> <br />Mihalkanin: <br />Montoya: <br />Hughson: <br />Chiu: <br />Cox: <br />Mayhew: <br />Tatum: <br /> <br />Fleming and Lopez. <br />Franks and Lopez. <br />Franks and Lopez. <br />Franks and Lopez. <br />Franks and Lopez. <br />Franks and Lopez. <br />Franks and Lopez. <br /> <br />Mayor Chiu introduced for consideration approval of two appointments to <br />the Youth Commission. Ms. Hughson moved to appoint Carol Peters as the <br />at-large member and Madelyn Smith as the Central Texas Medical Center <br />member, which passed unanimously. <br /> <br />Mayor Chiu introduced for consideration approval of one appointment to the <br />Human Development Commission. No nominations were received and this will <br />be rescheduled. <br />
