SAN MARCOS TRANSIT PLAN I FINALREPORT
City of San Marcos
Technology is rapidly changing the transit landscape. Improvements such as real-time arrival
information have shifted customers' expectations about howandwhen they receive information.
Recommendations to improve technologyin San Marcos are describedbelow.
Provide Bus Tracking Mobile App
Many transit providers use global
positioning system (GPS) technologyto
track buses and provide riders with real-
time arrival information, which has been
shown tore du ce perceived waiting times.
Bobcat Shuttle currently utilizes the
DoubleMap app to providethe estimated
time untilthenextbus arrival.
San Marcos Transit shoul d work to
incorporate all local routes into the same
platform as Bobcat Shuttleto improvetrip
planning for all riders.
Provide Paratransit Mobile App
Currently, San Marcos paratran sit riders
must call CARTSto schedule a ride.
Reservations must be received p ri or t o 4:00
p.m. fornext day service. Rides can be
scheduled from the daybefore a trip up to
two weeks before your trip. Ridershavea
30 -minute pickup windowin which they
must be ready, and cancellations must be
made by phone at least one hour b efore the
start of the pick-up window.
0
Rin Vkh Fla
Introducing a p aratransit mobile app would
increase scheduling options by making it easier to request or cancel a trip for many riders. A
p aratransit mobile app would also increase flexibility and reduce wait times by providing riders
with an estimated arrival time rather than a 30 -minute pickup window.
Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates, Inc. 13-16
