They \[the public\] don’t know about them \[arts offerings\] or they feel unwelcomed. <br />The barriers are communication and marketing getting the word out. “If people don’t know <br />what’s happening, they won’t go.” <br /> Currently no central source for information. <br /> Artists are introverted not necessarily involved in socializing and marketing. <br /> Communication is a big one …. City is a pretty big facilitator for arts programs throughout <br />the city, but they don’t always talk to the university or county about collaboration. <br /> Outreach is poor, social media is great but not everyone has it. <br /> Could be better about letting people know what is going on. <br />Accessibility. Interviewees provided feedback regarding barriers to accessibility in various areas (e.g., <br />financial, language, physical location). <br /> Things need to be free or really cheap. <br />A lot of our events are English oriented and we have a lot of Spanish speaking population. <br />Would be better if there was some attempt at a translator or be more intentional. <br /> Language barrier. <br /> \[Make participation\] more accessible and more welcoming to the general public. <br /> Lack of affordable hous\[ing\] drives people away. Majority of students live outside of city <br />limit. <br /> “\[There is\] a lot of community resentment because there is not a lot of affordable \[housing\] <br />… it’s structured more for the university.” <br /> Transient community. <br /> Not enough availability, arts is funneled through college and universities, not truly publicly <br />available or community serving. <br /> Harder for residents to purchase or engage in art. <br /> One of the challenges from the cultural side — which may impede passion — has to do with <br />the more prevalent cultural groups, they are dealing with issues for basic needs. They are <br />dealing with facility issues as well. <br /> The east side feels left out pretty often. <br /> Racial divide between east and west San Marcos. Need more arts on the east side. <br />The area is limited to a small golf course and we are limited to one-quarter of the golf <br />course. We should have more access to land. <br /> Physical access. Transportation to public spaces. <br /> Crossing the freeway is a barrier, it separates the community. <br /> People have a hard time getting to events. <br />Parking. Interviewees also expressed that parking was a significant barrier to participation in the arts. <br /> There is no parking. They could do a lot more to bring the town in. <br /> Parking is a huge one.
