SECTION 3: CITY PROFILE <br />A review of building permits gives a picture of the built environment and the number of buildings <br />that are being constructed in the city. Table 3-6 lists the number of residential buildings and total <br />units authorized through a permit from the City of San Marcos between 2000 and 2021. The data <br />includes total buildings, total units and the total value of construction costs to show the potential <br />increase in vulnerability of structures to the various hazards assessed in the HMAP risk <br />assessment. The increase in vulnerability can be attributed to the higher construction costs that <br />would be factored into repairing or replacing a structure using current market values. Permits are <br />reported annually in September and the data includes that from 2000 through 2021 to <br />demonstrate growth. Of the residential building permits issued in this period, 59 percent were for <br />multi -family residential units and 41 percent for single family units. Housing type can also be an <br />indication of an individual's ability to recover from a disaster. 18 <br />Table 3-6.
