1959 <br />The Southwest <br />Texas State Teachers <br />College is renamed <br />Southwest Texas <br />State College. <br />1960 <br />Hays County and San <br />Marcos populations <br />increased to <br />19,934 and 12,713, <br />respectively. <br />Forest Hills Addition <br />and College Heights <br />Addition platted. <br />A 1959 Yard of the Month in front of a typical <br />post -World War 11 ranch house <br />(Courtesy of SMPL) <br />19611-35 and SH 123 construction <br />(Courtesy of SMPL) <br />1961 <br />San Marcos Colored <br />School renamed <br />Dunbar School. <br />Interstate 35 <br />construction began, <br />shifting business from <br />downtown. <br />Texas Historical Marker <br />Program formally <br />established. <br />1962 <br />The Urban Renewal <br />Agency of San Marcos <br />was officially organized <br />through a special <br />election. Its actions, <br />including the use of <br />eminent domain, led <br />to the eradication <br />of the Katy Addition <br />to create Rio Vista <br />Park, displacing 314 <br />households (310 <br />Mexican American, 2 <br />Black, and 2 White) <br />and resulting in the <br />loss of community, <br />neighborhood <br />businesses, and <br />generational wealth. <br />SAN MARCOS CULTURE & HISTORY 41 <br />
