DEMOGRAPHICS <br />San Marcos is a growing and diverse community. The city's population increased by an estimated <br />5.6% percent between 2020 and 2023, higher than the 4.7% population increase in the state <br />of Texas for the same period. Twenty percent of San Marcos residents identify as two or more <br />races, compared to the state percentage of just 2.3%. San Marcos also has a higher educational <br />attainment compared to the state. As of 2020, 90.9% of San Marcos' residents had a high school <br />degree or higher and 37.3% had a bachelor's degree or higher, compared 85.7% and 33.1 %, <br />respectively, at the state level. Note: In Texas, there are approximately 11 Million people that <br />identify as Hispanic; at least 10 million have indigenous ancestry. <br />Census data indicates that San Marcos has economic challenges to overcome. The median <br />household income in San Marcos is $51,030, about $25,000 lower than the state median income. <br />Less homes in San Marcos are owner -occupied compared to state statistics: 30.5% of San Marcos <br />residents are owner -occupied, while the state rate is 62.6%. The poverty rate in San Marcos is also <br />nearly double the state average, at 26.7% compared to 13.7% in Texas. <br />Table 1.
