1996 DUNBAR AND EAST GUADALUPE NEIGHBORHOODS SURVEY <br />HPF THC CLG Grant <br />Newlan Knight and Associates, Inc. <br />Survey and provide NRHP and/or local landmark and district eligibility <br />recommendations for historic -age properties in four areas: <br />1. Dunbar neighborhood (historically African American). <br />2. East Guadalupe neighborhood (traditionally Mexican American). <br />3. Small portion of Victory Gardens (Barrio Victoria) along Invasion and <br />MacArthur Streets (traditionally Mexican American). <br />4. Small industrial area north of East Guadalupe along the railroad tracks <br />(Railroad Sector). <br />Phase One of a comprehensive survey of San Marcos and categorize <br />properties with low, medium, or high preservation priorities. <br />264 resources. <br />East Guadalupe Neighborhood: recommended not eligible as an <br />NRHP district; identified 6 high priority properties that could be <br />designated local historic landmarks. <br />Railroad Sector: recommended not eligible as an NRHP district; <br />identified 6 high priority properties that could be designated local <br />historic landmarks. <br />Dunbar Neighborhood: Small area including both sides of MILK Drive <br />and north side of Centre Street (between Fredericksburg and Herndon <br />RECOMMENDED Streets), including Wesley Chapel recommended for "consideration as <br />a historic district" <br />Buildings to "consider for individual designation": <br />1885 Hays County Jail at 168 South Fredericksburg Drive <br />Former 1873 Jail (now Calaboose African American Museum). <br />Old First Baptist Church (African American). <br />Residences at 711 and 600 MLK Dr. and 321 South LBJ Drive. <br />Jackson Chapel United Methodist Church at 524 Centre Street. <br />Historic Resources Survev of the Dunbar and East Guadalube <br />Neighborhoods <br />Dunbar Historic District (2003). <br />Old First Baptist Church Local Landmark (2018). <br />Calaboose African American Museum Local Landmark (2021). <br />PRESERVATION IN THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS 63 <br />
