ia_, <br />San Marcos River (COSM) <br />STATE RESOURCES <br />Texas State manages the vast majority of <br />state resources in San Marcos, including <br />its scenic campus, historic buildings and <br />structures, Museums, and parks. <br />SEWELL PARK, 1917 <br />In 1916, Dr. S.M. Sewell at present-day <br />Texas State conceived of a park and <br />swimming hole for In 1917, the U.S. Bureau <br />of Fisheries leased the college four acres <br />of land along the river, then only three <br />feet deep. Using mules, college students <br />cleaned the river bottom, built up the <br />banks, and smoothed the slopes. It was <br />called Riverside Park until 1946, when it <br />was renamed in honor of Sewell. <br />THE MEADOWS CENTER FOR <br />WATER AND THE ENVIRONMENT, <br />2002 <br />Texas State University's The Meadows <br />Center for Water and the Environment is <br />connected to the Spring Lake Natural Area <br />and is the former site of the Aquarena <br />Springs Amusement Park, which was the <br />subject of a Texas State Public History <br />Project and archaeological investigations <br />by the school's Center for Archaeological <br />Studies (CAS) established in 2000.
