<br /> <br />175 <br /> <br />...... <br /> <br /> <br />ORDINANCE 1987- LOS <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS, CHANGING THE <br />NAME OF THAT STREET KNOWN AS COMAL/PORTER <br />STREET LOCATED WITHIN THE CORPORATE <br />LIMITS OF SAID CITY TO MARTIN LUTHER KING <br />DRIVE, ORDERING THE CITY SECRETARY, <br />DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS, THE DIRECTOR OF <br />PLANNING AND THE DIRECTOR OF ENVIRONMENT <br />AND ENGINEERING TO ENTER SAID CHANGE IN <br />AND UPON OFFICIAL RECORDS AND MAPS, AND <br />DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of San Marcos has <br />received a petition from 168 citizens of the City of San <br />Marcos asking that the name of Coma1/Porter Street be changed <br />to Martin Luther King Drive; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of San Marcos, <br />Texas, recognizes the work that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. <br />did during his life to achieve racial justice, end <br />segregation, secure basic civil and voting rights, and <br />advance the cause of human rights: and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in 1986, the Congress of the United <br />created a national holiday to honor Dr. King; and, <br /> <br />States <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Dr. King was honored during his lifetime by <br />being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964: and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, many cities throughout the United States have <br />previously honored Dr. King by naming streets and public <br />buildings after him: and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting <br />Rights Act of 1965 remain as part of Dr. King's legacy: and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Dr. King was assassinated in 1968 as he worked <br />to help striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee: <br />and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a short biography of Dr. King's life has been <br />written by historian John Hope Franklin and attached to this <br />Ordinance as Exhibit A: and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of San Marcos, <br />Texas, wishes to recognize and honor the work and life of Dr. <br />Martin Luther King, Jr., in a public and demonstrable <br />fashion: and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Comal/Porter Street is intended to connect <br />Hunter Road with C.M. Allen in the future as part of a major <br />thoroughfare to serve incoming traffic from the Hunter Road <br />area: now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN <br />MARCOS, TEXAS: <br /> <br />SECTION 1. That the street known as Comal/Porter <br />Street located within the corporate limits of the City of San <br />Marcos, Texas, shall hereafter be known as and named Martin <br />Luther King Drive for its entire length, including any <br />extensions. <br />
