ORDINANCE 1987- LOS -- AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS, CHANGING THE NAME OF THAT STREET KNOWN AS COMAL/PORTER STREET LOCATED WITHIN THE CORPORATE LIMITS OF SAID CITY TO MARTIN LUTHER KING DRIVE, ORDERING THE CITY SECRETARY, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS, THE DIRECTOR OF PLANNING AND THE DIRECTOR OF ENVIRONMENT AND ENGINEERING TO ENTER SAID CHANGE IN AND UPON OFFICIAL RECORDS AND MAPS, AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of San Marcos has received a petition from 168 citizens of the City of San Marcos asking that the name of Coma1/Porter Street be changed to Martin Luther King Drive; and, WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of San Marcos, Texas, recognizes the work that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did during his life to achieve racial justice, end segregation, secure basic civil and voting rights, and advance the cause of human rights: and, WHEREAS, in 1986, the Congress of the United created a national holiday to honor Dr. King; and, States WHEREAS, Dr. King was honored during his lifetime by being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964: and, WHEREAS, many cities throughout the United States have previously honored Dr. King by naming streets and public buildings after him: and, WHEREAS, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 remain as part of Dr. King's legacy: and, WHEREAS, Dr. King was assassinated in 1968 as he worked to help striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee: and, WHEREAS, a short biography of Dr. King's life has been written by historian John Hope Franklin and attached to this Ordinance as Exhibit A: and, WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of San Marcos, Texas, wishes to recognize and honor the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in a public and demonstrable fashion: and, WHEREAS, Comal/Porter Street is intended to connect Hunter Road with C.M. Allen in the future as part of a major thoroughfare to serve incoming traffic from the Hunter Road area: now, therefore, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the street known as Comal/Porter Street located within the corporate limits of the City of San Marcos, Texas, shall hereafter be known as and named Martin Luther King Drive for its entire length, including any extensions.
