Public health is a critical competitive concern for <br />companies and workers alike. Greater San Marcos will ensure that the l <br />population has access to quality, affordable health care service <br />The Community Assessment and community input processes showed potential to <br />expand social service options and providers in the area. Relative to the region, <br />Caldwell and Hays Counties have higher proportions of uninsured <br />lower numbers of physicians. Local employers have reported diffi <br />in health care (in particular, entry-level jobs) and technical fields. <br />In addition to workforce training, mental health, addiction, and <br />barriers to entry into the workforce. Developing additional, af <br />social services is extremely important in enabling residents to find and retain <br />employment and in helping the long-term unemployed residents improve their <br />standard of living. <br /> <br />Action 1: Expand its health care provider options to meet the needs of the <br />growing Greater San Marcos population. <br />Study health care provisions available in the area, current health care needs, <br />and projected long-term medical needs of the population. <br />o <br />Prioritize the identified needs and leverage local leadership an <br />expertise to develop strategies to fill service gaps and launch <br />programs at the areas two hospitals, Central Texas Medical Center in <br />San Marcos and Seton Medical Center in Kyle. <br />o <br />Determine the need to source additional revenue to enhance the <br />regions capacity to provide affordable health care services. <br />Consider a variety of fundraising mechanisms, including a <br />nonprofit health care foundation; a broad-based regional <br />fundraising campaign directed at companies, philanthropists <br />and existing foundations; or a public vote to direct tax monies <br />for health care capacity-building or creation of an affordable <br />health care fund. <br />Seek to develop the teaching capacities of the two area <br />hospitals. <br />Final Strategy <br />September 2009 44 <br /> <br />
