OFFICE MEMORANDUM
C. J. Webster, City Manager
FROM: Albert Sierra, Director Community Services
SUBJECT: Brush Collection Alternatives
DATE: July 19, 1978 RE:
C. J.:
Brush collection (junk, dead animals, wood etc., etc.)
is a costly operation which is provided as a service to the
residents of this community. Most cities do not provide for
brush collection or else they charge for it.
Mr. Lugo and myself have discussed this city service and
provide the following options for your consideration:
1. Charges for the service of brush collection is
' recommended at a minimum of $1.50 for less than
five minutes and .30 for each minute thereafter.
Once the fee system is implemented it is expected
that the work load will decrease and we can revert
back to the call method of collection. Along with
this method it is recommended that we acquire a
brush burner to save space in the landfill. The
added cost is $14,000.00 for the burner.
2. We can continue to provide the service we now give
our residents and at the same time also acquire 2
large brush chippers. This method would be more
expensive and we feel that the time difference be-
tween methods 1 and 2 is not really all that signi-
ficant. The chippers would cost approximately
$10,000.00 each and would require at least 2 crew-
men per truck.
3. The last alternative and least recommended is the
idea that we get out of the brush collection service
altogether. This suggestion would lay-off 3 employees.
1
CSM-100
