}"

~
L1San~s

POST OFFICE BOX 125/SAN MARCOS, TEXAS 18666/AC 512 892-2417

November 8, 1972

TO: City Manager

FROM: Assistant to City Manager

REFERENCE: Backhoe Bid

Bids for a tractor-loader-backhoe were opened Wednesday,
November 1, 1972, at 4:00 p.m. The following is a resap
of the base bid with diesel option:

I

Girard Machinery & Supply Co. - CASE-J80B
Lanford Equipment Company - M-F 50A
Central Texas Equipment Co. - AC-615'
Case Power & Equipment Company- CASE-580B
River City Machinery Company - CASE-580B

$11,047.00
9,905.00
10,809.08
10,589.00
10,303.00

The low bid was from Lanford Equipment Company, bidding a
Massey Ferguson 50A. Second low was River City Machinery Company,
bidding a Case 580B. The two low bids were examined by myself
and George Bo~ker. The results of this examination revealed
that, from an operator's standpoint, the Case 580B would prove
to be a more productive piece of equipment. Further, there were
details of construction, such as welds, dual boom cylinders,
bracing and IQader bucket operation, that would enable the Case
to function at a lower maintenance cost and, conversely, with
less down time.

Examining the two pieces of ~quipment from an experience factor,
Case has many moreqackhoes in operation in this area than any
other single aompany. Owner~ maintain that Case lasts longer
and out~performs any other backhoe. Also, the service facil ities
at River City appear to be superior to those at Lanford.

I

In conclusion, the City of San Marcos has an opportunity to purchase
for $398 more than the low bid the Mercedes Benz of the backhoe
industry. I would then recommend Council acceptance of the bid
from River City Equipment Company on a Case 580B backhoe-loader
for $10,303.00. This figure below the $11,000 budgeted.

Respectfully submitted,

fi~,-----

JBB:dh

James 8. Baugh
Assistant to the City Manager
