The City Manager stated there was no <br />indication of a delinquent halance. Alderman Hillhurn felt the Council should <br />not make this a policy. It waS the dedsion of the Council that such matters <br />he referred to the proper welfare organizatbn for disposition. <br /> <br />The Council was informed that during calendar 1958, it was necessary that <br />the City appropriate $991.44 to the-Firemen's Relief & Pension Fund, in addi- <br />tion to the regular matching funds, ,to overcome the deficit. At this time, <br />there are three (3) widows and seven (1) firemen drawing retirement benefits <br />totaling $2,700.00 annually. Income from the paid men is $369.00 per year, <br />which is matched by the City, and $100.00 from the volunteers for a total of <br />$838.00. The state's contributions amounted to $767.30. The City Manager <br />toled the Council if many more men retire, -this will get to be quite a sub- <br />stantial appropriation. No action was taken. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The Mayor stated that he suggested deferring until February the appoint- <br />ment of a civil defense director and tht would the City Manager act as Civil <br />Defense Director until a permanent appointment was made. <br /> <br />At the December 22nd meeting the City Manager was instructed to have an <br />ordinance prepared limiting the height of curbing on all lots in the City <br />Cemetery. Alderman steakley introduced an ordinance captioned: <br /> <br />"AN CRDINANCE REGULATIOO THE ERECTION <br />AND PLACNNG OF CURBS AROUND THE PER IMETER <br />OF LOTS AND BLo:::r<s, OR ANY PART THEREOF. <br />OF CEMETERY PROPERTY HEREAFTER SOID AND <br />CONVEYED BY THE CITY; PROVIDIOO FOR <br />INSERTION IN DEEDS FROM THE CITY OF PRO- <br />VISION TO EFFECTUATE THIS CRDINANCE." <br /> <br />and moved its adoption. The Ordinance was read in full. Motion for adoption <br />was seconded by Alderman Hillburn. Upon rollcall the ayes and nayes were as <br />follows: <br /> <br />Ayes: Aldermen Beecroft <br />Davis <br />Hillburn <br />Steakley <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Nayesl None <br /> <br />Whereupon the Mayor pro~ounced the Ordinance passed app~oved and adopted. <br /> <br />It was reported that Mr. Ed Cape and the City Attorney are working on an <br />agreement to cover the City's use of the area just South of the Cheatham Street <br />Bridge being used as a recreat10n area. Manager Fuller stated he had written <br />the Gilcrease Foundation requesting permission for the City to clear the channel <br />and the west hank of the San Marcos River from the Cheatham Street Bridge south <br />to the bend in the river. Mr. Paul Rogers, at this time, stated that he and <br />his sister$ are the owners of a strip of land located just south of the present <br />hridge on Cheatham Street which is the old crossing. Mr. Rogers stated he <br />would be glad to transfer this area to the City and suggested that the City <br />Attorney prepare an easement transferring this land to .the City. <br /> <br />The Council was notified that the easement ~or a street in front of the <br />new high school had he en forwarded to the Superintendent of the San Marcos <br />Independent School District as approved hy the Council at the meeting of December <br />9th, 1958. The City Manager had forwarded the required specifications for the streetsl <br />construction. City Manager Fuller invited the Council'S attention to the need <br />for a name for this new street. Mayor Allen suggested the street be named in <br />memory of the late Mr. Frank Dietterich, former Mayor of San Marcos. Motion <br />was made hy Alderman Beecroft, seconded hy Alderman Steakley, that the new street <br />in front of the new high school be named UDiettrich Drive".
