<br />81. <br /> <br />Regular Meeting <br /> <br />July 26, 2004 <br /> <br />Page 5 <br /> <br />The Council agreed by consensus to reschedule these appointments to the <br />next Regular Meeting on August 9, 2004. <br /> <br />Mayor Narvaiz introduced for consideration approval of fourteen <br />appointments to the Blue Ribbon Bond Committee (Temporary). Mr. Diaz <br />moved to appoint John Wade and Ruben Becerra, Mr. Guerrero moved to <br />appoint Cynthia Mendez Arredondo and Artiemo (Frankie) Arredondo, Jr., Mr. <br />Mihalkanin moved to appoint Joe Castillo and Dennis Dunn, Mayor Narvaiz <br />moved to appoint Chris North and Lydia Marie Trevino, Mr. Thomaides moved <br />to appoint Theresa James and Bill DeSoto, Mr. Bose moved to appoint Gary <br />Gooch and Darrell Farr and Mr. Taylor moved to appoint Bruce Harper, which <br />passed unanimously. The remaining position will be rescheduled for the <br />next Regular Meeting to be held on August 9, 2004. <br /> <br />Mayor Narvaiz introduced for consideration adoption of a Resolution, which <br />was read in its entirety, the caption which reads as follows: <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS <br />EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR A PROPOSED HOTEL AND CONFERENCE CENTER <br />DEVELOPMENT; AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> <br />Mr. Mihalkanin moved for adoption of the Resolution and Mr. Guerrero <br />seconded the motion. Mayor Narvaiz stated several citizens have signed up <br />to speak on this issue. 1) Tom McNair stated he opposes the <br />Hotel/Convention Center. 2) Reece Morrison stated he has been a resident <br />for 40 years. He stated the river is the crown jewel of the City, and the <br />City Council will protect it. He stated this project will be beneficial <br />to the citizens of San Marcos, with jobs and a larger tax base. 3) <br />Richard Weik stated he supports this project. He also stated the City <br />benefits from CVB, and he does not want their funds taken away. Mr. Weik <br />stated he has been with Stone Bridge Hotel in San Marcos for 26 yers and <br />is pro-growth. He wants San Marcos to succeed and believes the hoteliers <br />in town are pro-growth. 4) Milton Vaverek stated he has been a resident <br />for 30 years. He stated he feels the City taxes are already high enough. <br />He encouraged the Council to allow the citizens to vote on the convention <br />center issue. 5) Wayne Becak stated he is the Chairman of the Economic <br />Development Council. He stated the City of San Marcos has the opportunity <br />to have a first-class facility. He stated this is a good, clean industry <br />and will increase sales tax revenues. Everyone will need to work together <br />to make this project happen. He does not think this matter needs to be <br />voted on. 6) Paul Valdez stated he has been doing research on Hammons <br />projects. He stated he has only been able to find positive articles on <br />Mr. Hammons. He also stated Mr. Hammons makes large contributions to <br />charities and communities. He stated the Council should make the decision <br />on this project. 7) Amanda Webster stated she supports the <br />Hotel/Convention Center and opposes an increase of the hotel occupancy <br />tax. 8) Daniel Scales stated he wanted the Council to allow the citizens <br />to vote on this issue. 9) Sherri Bilson stated she dealt with Mr. Hammons <br />
