The San Marcos
Municipal Airport is also discussed
within a jurisdictional context.

LOCATION

The City of San Marcos, Texas, is
located along the 1-35 corridor in south
central Texas. Refer to Exhibit lA,
Location Map. Just 31 miles south of
Austin, the state capital and booming
high tech center, and 50 miles north of
San Antonio, the city of San Marcos is
situated at the midway point of regional
growth. For this reason the 1-35 corridor
between San Antonio and Austin is one
of the most rapidly expanding regional
economies in the nation. Three of the
ten largest cities in the United States
and over 70 percent of the Texas
population are within 200 miles of San
Marcos.

San Marcos has long been known for its
natural springs and clear, clean rivers.
Situated at the foothills of the Texas
hill country, San Marcos is a favorite
Texas recreation destination. San
Marcos is also home to Southwest Texas
State University.

San Marcos lies at the junction of
Highway 1-35 and Texas State Highway
80. 1-35 is the major north-south
freeway in the state and the major
interstate artery linking the United
States and trading partners Canada
and Mexico. Highway 80 connects to
State Highway 183, the main highway
to the coastal bend region and Corpus
Christi, Texas.

The San Marcos Municipal Airport is
contained entirely within the corporate
limits of the City of San Marcos. It is
located on the eastern edge of the city,
east of 1-35 and the San Marcos River.
State Highway 80 carries east-west
traffic south of the airport. Texas State
Highway 21 (locally Airport Highway)
T-intersects 80 and parallels the
western portion of the airport.

The original main airport entrance off
Airport Highway provides ground
access to the Gary Job Corps Training
Center, located directly south of the
airport. What was formerly a secondary
road now is the main access road to the
airport and most ofthe facilities located
on the airfield. Highway 21 also marks
the county line between Hays County
and Caldwell County. County Road 283,
(locally called William Pettus Road)
runs east-west and intersects Airport
Highway north of the airport. William
Pettus Road, in turn, is intersected by
Farm-to-Market (FM) Road 1984,
completing the ring of the airport as it

1-2
