Department staff has reviewed <br />the map of the airport location. Comments in this letter are intended to assist <br />your planning efforts and ar~ provided to minimize effects of this project upon <br />fish, wildlife, and plant resources. <br /> <br />The project proposes to construct new facilities on previously undeveloped areas <br />in the airport vicinity. In general, care should be taken to avoid adverse impacts <br />to the special species and natural communities that provide habitat for wildlife. <br />Certain categories of these biotic resources warrant special consideration. The <br />occurrence of high quality habitats such as wetlands, riparian drainages, and <br />native vegetation communities should be identified and avoided where possible. <br />Other habitats to avoid are those that are locally and regionally scarce and those <br />supporting or capable of supporting unique species or communities. Adverse <br />affects to resources should be fully evaluated, and where possible, assessment of <br />less damaging alternatives should be undertaken. The Department always <br />recommends the use of previously disturbed or existing sites for project <br />construction. <br /> <br />In general, an inventory of existing natural resources should be made of the <br />project area. In addition to a natural resource inventory, specific evaluations <br />should be designed to predict project impacts upon these natural resources. <br />Sufficient documentation should be supplied to accurately interpret the value of <br />the natural resources involved and the extent to which the project will impact <br />these resources. This can often be accomplished best with aerial and ground <br />photography, terrain maps, charts and tables, and narrative descriptions of these <br />data. More detailed information outlining requirements and expectations of this <br />Department concerning environmental assessments and impact statements are <br />attached in a document entitled, "Texas Parks and \Vildlife Department <br />Suggested Guidelines for Preparation of Environmental Assessment <br />Documents.
