This sector <br />represents 19.5 percent of total <br />employment. Wholesale trade and retail <br />trade have increased annually at 5.4 <br />and 5.5 respectively. Over the first ten <br />year period the retail trade posted a 5 <br />percent yearly increase. The second and <br />third ten year periods, however, <br />indicate growth of 6.4 and 6.1 percent <br />respectively. According to the State of <br />Texas Comptroller's office this coincides <br />with anticipated increases followed by <br />slowing as trade competition from <br />Mexico becomes a factor in the economy. <br />Wholesale trade accounted for 22,430 <br />new jobs over thirty years and retail <br /> <br />trade accounted for 102,866 over the <br />same period. <br /> <br />Services <br /> <br />The services industry remains the <br />strongest of the employment sectors for <br />the Austin-San Marcos MSA. Continued <br />expansion is forecast, driven by the <br />area's rapid population growth. The <br />services sector posted the highest <br />growth rate among the various <br />employment sectors with a 6.6 percent <br />annual increase. Between 1990 and <br />1994, 91 percent of the employment <br />increases within the services area were <br />divided between the business services <br />and health services areas.
