Project Setting <br />San Marcos is situated in Central Texas, along the 1 -35 corridor, approximately 20 miles south of <br />Austin. From the banks of the San Marcos and Blanco Rivers, to the gently rolling foothills of <br />the Texas Hill Country in Hays County, San Marcos boasts a variety of topography and <br />landscape features giving it a distinctive character. The population of San Marcos is <br />approximately 50,373 which comprise a growing university and the desire of others to move <br />away from the metropolitan areas of Austin and San Antonio. <br />Existing Parks and Recreation System <br />The San Marcos parks system includes several parks and recreational types, which this plan <br />addresses: <br />• Land for informal play and passive recreation <br />• Facilities for team sports and active recreation <br />• Open space for passive recreation, education and conservation <br />• Linear space for trail networks <br />• Recreational and cultural programs <br />9 <br />
