<br />125. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION 2001- 55R <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS EXPRESSING THE CITY'S <br />POSITION ON 2000 CENSUS INFORMATION FOR THE <br />CITY; AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the U.S. Census Bureau has provided the City with 2000 Census <br />information showing the City to have a total population of 34,733; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, compared to the City's 1990 census population of 28,743, the new census <br />information shows growth of20.8% since 1990, or a 1.9% compounded annual rate; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, previous population estimates for the City have been as follows: <br /> <br />· U.S. Census Bureau: 40,538 (1999) <br />· Texas State Data Center: 40,109 (2000) <br />· City of San Marcos Planning Department: 39,871 (2000) <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the total number of housing units of all types in the City was 15,532 as of <br />2000, as counted by the City Planning Department; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City estimates that the U.S. Census Bureau undercounted the City's <br />2000 population by 5,440, or 14%; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, census information is of critical importance to the City of San Marcos <br />because it serves to determinine representation for the City's residents in the state and federal <br />legislatures, and it affects a variety of government funding processes, including block grants, <br />transportation and health care, and therefore impacts the health, safety and welfare of the San <br />Marcos community. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS: <br /> <br />PART 1. The City Council officially expresses its dissatisfaction with the 2000 U.S. <br />Census Bureau information for the City, and the significant undercount of the City's population <br />that is reflected in this information. <br /> <br />PART 2. The City Council directs the City staff to determine the processes and viability <br />of challenging the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau information for the City. <br /> <br />PART 3. This resolution is effective immediately upon adoption. <br />
