Section III

Executive Summary

During the investigation of crimes, our officers search for tingerprints ',vhen possible. If
fingerprints are found, they are submitted to the Austin Office of the Depart.rnent of
Public Safety for comparisons. Because of the backlog of fingerprint analysis requests, it
is often several months before a comparison to their special fingerprint database is
completed. The grant application would allo\v the San Marcos Police Department to
purchase a latent fingerprint analysis terminal that would be tied to DPS' Automated
Fingerprint Identification System, or AFIS. The officers in the field \vould be able to
retrieve a fingerprint, bring that print into the station and police persor-nel would be able
to complete a database comparison \Vithin one hour. The comparison \vould be made
against the State's database that contains millions of fingerprints. This would greatly
increase our ability to quickly identify suspects and effect arrests.
