<br />Sector Two <br /> <br />Chapter 2 - Today <br /> <br />The Natural Environment <br /> <br />Geology <br /> <br />Sector Two, along with Sectors One, Three, and Eight, is located in the Edwards Plateau. <br />This area is hilly and characterized by rocky, shallow soil. These areas sit above the <br />Balcones Escarpment. <br /> <br />Topography <br /> <br />Land elevations in Sector Two vary from 812 feet above sea level along Ranch Road 12 <br />between Bishop Street and Franklin Drive to 641 feet above sea level near the <br />intersection of Prospect Street and Columbia Avenue. Sector Two topography is shown <br />on the Natural Features map on the following page. <br /> <br />Edwards Aquifer Zone <br /> <br />The Edwards Aquifer is the water-bearing underground network of porous and <br />honeycombed limestone fonnation of the Edwards Plateau. It is a major source of water <br />for San Marcos, as well as over 1.5 million other Texans, and is the source ofthe San <br />Marcos River. The northwestern and southwestern portions of Sector Two (includes the <br />Greater Castle Forest Neighborhood and a portion of the Westover and Southwest Hills <br />neighborhoods) are in the recharge zone. The recharge zone is an area of fractures, caves <br />and porous limestone that provides a path for water to run from the surface into the <br />artesian area of the aquifer. The remainder of Sector Two is located in the transition <br />zone, where faults, fractures, and other geologic features present possible avenues for <br />recharge of surface water into the aquifer. <br /> <br />Watersheds <br /> <br />A watershed is an area that drains into a river or creek. Sector Two lies in the Purgatory <br />Creek watershed. <br /> <br />Floodplains <br /> <br />There are no floodways or floodplains that are mapped by the Federal Emergency <br />Management Agency (FEMA) located in Sector Two. <br /> <br />Adopted: July 23, 2001 <br /> <br />2-3 <br />
