<br />SAN MARCOS TASK FORCE TO COMBAT TEENAGE AND <br />YOUNG ADULT ALCOHOL ISSUES <br /> <br />Task Force Charge <br /> <br />To identify issues and develop alcohol programs to address education, prevention, <br />intervention, treatment and law enforcement needs in the San Marcos and swr <br />community to combat teenage and young adult alcohol use and abuse. <br /> <br />Desired Outcomes <br /> <br />- Increase the awareness of the entire community in regard to alcohol use and abuse <br />issues of its underage population; <br />- Increase the accuracy of underage youth and young adults' perceptions regarding <br />general use of and attitudes about alcohol; <br />- Increase underage youth and young adults' awareness oflocal, state and federal law, <br />prevention programs, related services, and concerns about alcohol use and abuse; <br />- Increase youth and young adults' resistance to peer pressure about alcohol use; <br />- Reduce negative behaviors related to alcohol use; <br />- Reduce the number of students driving under the influence of alcohol; <br />- Reduce the number of students experiencing legal problems as a result of alcohol <br />use or abuse; <br />- Reduce the accessibility of alcohol to underage youth or young adults; <br />- Reduce the number of underage youth or young adults being victimized in some way <br />(e.g. physical assault, sexual assault, harassment, etc.) as a result of their own or <br />others' alcohol use or abuse. <br /> <br />All programs will encourage and support dependability, accountability and <br />responsibility. <br /> <br />Structure of Task Force <br /> <br />The Task Force is sponsored by the Mayor of San Marcos, the Superintendent of San <br />Marcos Consolidated Independent School District and the President of Southwest Texas <br />State University. A steering committee directs the work of the Task Force. Members of <br />the Steering Committee include its chair (Dr. Jimmy Cobb), the chairs of sub-teams, and <br />members of the San Marcos community at large. The work of the Task Force is done <br />through the sub-teams who will bring forth recommendations for the community. The <br />Steering Committee may direct these recommendations to governmental units, <br />educational agencies, social service agencies, law enforcement agencies, the judicial <br />system, business groups such as chambers of commerce or particular vendors such as bar <br />owners and property owners, media, parents and students. The logic, reasonableness and <br />feasibility of the recommendations and the persuasive ability of the Executive Sponsors <br />and the Steering Committee will determine if the recommendations are implemented. <br />
