112.

RESOLUTION NO. 2000- 210 R

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN
MARCOS SUPPORTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A TEXAS SCIENCE
AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER IN SAN MARCOS; AND DECLARING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.

RECITALS:

1. Dr. Thomas Arsuffi, President of the Texas Academy of Science, has presented the City
Council with a proposal for the establishment of a Texas Science and Technology Center in San
Marcos, and has requested that the City Council express its support for the proposal.

2. The future well-being of the State is heavily dependent on our ability to provide scientists,
engineers, and technicians for the State's industries, businesses, medical institutions, colleges and
universities.

3. These professions require rigorous and lengthy training, and this fact, together with
common attitudes about careers in science may interfere with attracting young Texans to these
professions.

4. A Texas Science and Technology Center in San Marcos, including an interactive, hands-
on museum, a program of conferences and workshops, traveling exhibits, and a home base for the
Texas Academy of Science, would provide a place Texas youth could visit to foster an interest in
science and science-related careers, would contribute to broader public understanding of science,
would serve as a resource for Texas teachers and students, and would foster creative interaction
among Texas scientists.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS,
TEXAS:

PART 1. The City Council supports the establishment of the Texas Science and Technology
Center in San Marcos.

PART 2. This resolution is effective immediately upon its passage and adoption.

ADOPTED on October 23, 2000.

~ .
h ~4t( ~/\.-
Dav!
