The Hays County Emergency Plan provided valuable <br />information to the Mitigation Planning Committee during the planning process to develop the <br />Hays County Mitigation Action Plan. <br /> <br />COMMUNITY SPECIFIC INFORMATION <br /> <br />Description of County <br />Hays County is hilly in the west, blackland in the east and located on the edge of the Balcones <br />Escarpment. The major streams that flow through Hays County include Pederna1es River, <br />Onion Creek, Blanco River and the San Marcos River. <br /> <br />Transportation <br />Interstate Highway IH-35 extends through the County from north to south connecting Austin to <br />San Antonio. U.S. Highway 290 traverses the county from east to west, from Austin through <br />northern Hays County and connecting to IH -10 to the west. Numerous state highways, ranch <br />roads and farmer to market roads crisscross Hays County. Major rail routes parallel IH-35 in <br />Hays County. <br /> <br />Economic Profile <br />Total Hays County wages, based on the 2002-2003 Texas Almanac, are $159M. Property <br />values are listed at $4.8B and annual retail sales are listed as $1.09B. <br /> <br />Agriculture <br />Beef cattle, goats, exotic wildlife, greenhouse nurseries, hay, com, sorghum, wheat and cotton <br />with a market value of $1O.8M based on the 2003 Texas Almanac. <br /> <br />Land Use fTxDEM P-321 <br />The Interstate Highway 35 corridor in Hays County is a rapidly developing area due to the <br />close proximity to Austin and San Antonio. Land use is a mixture of commercial, light <br />industrial/manufacturing, tourism business and residential. The northern portion of Hays <br />County is located in the Austin metropolitan area. Hays County experienced a 47.6% <br />population increase from 1990 to 2000 and this trend is expected to continue.
