In the past,
the amount expended by the Heritage Association has frequently surpassed, even doubled, the
agreed amount.
In this year of 1999 we had considerable publicity through a new tradition, the Great
Pumpkin Patch in the park around the Charles S. Cock House Museum. And, in 1999-2000 as
we herald a new millinieum we recall the contributions by the Heritage Association of the past 25
years which have included a total of $100,000 contriubted to the city in the areas of preservation
and beautification. This amount came not from luncheons alone but from tours, dues, and money
making events. The money was used for repeated restoration of the Gazebo, restoration of the
Cemetery Chapel, restoration of the facade of the Hays County Annex and the Peter C. Woods
Memorial Fountain, initial furnishings for the Calaboose, structural repairs to the Charles S. Cock
House Museum, continuation of Arbor Day ceremonies, establishing a presence with the Texas
Historical Commission which resulted in 10 years successive recognition as a Distinguished
Service (to the state of Texas) Organization. Additionally throughout these years we supported the
River Foundation with $35,000, and, subtly that organization has replaced the Heritage
Association in responisibily for care of the San Marcos River.
The Arbor Day Ceremony in 1999 honored the memory of Theodora Scrutchin who among
many other things was the founder of the City Library. The Arbor Tree in January 2000 will be
planted to the memory of the late Joe G. Rodriguez who was treasurer of the City Bicentennial
Commission throughout the construction of the San Marcos River Walk.
Now, with a new era approaching, the Heritage Association looks forward to its progress
in the area of preservation by becoming insturmental in accepting the historic Merriman Cabin from
Aquarena and relocating it to a site very nesr its original location, a neighbor to the reconstructed
"railroad station". In the future, too, is the acceptance of the so-called L:BJ House and locating it
appropriately in a historic district for use as Arhive and office of the Heritage Association.
Attached is the year's report on the Cottage Kitchen luncheons detailing the sponsors and
host groups, indication of the considerable support received by Heritage Association from all
facets of the community.

Frances Stovall

Helen VanGundy
