Hydrologic drought is related to the effects of precipitation shortfalls on streamflows and
reservoir, lake, and groundwater levels.

Agricultural drought is defined principally in terms of soil moisture deficiencies relative to
water demands of plant life, usually crops.

Socioeconomic drought associates the supply and demand of economic goods or services with
elements of meteorologic, hydrologic, and agricultural drought. Socioeconomic drought occurs
when the demand for water exceeds the supply as a result of a weather related supply. The
World Meteorological Organization calls this a water management drought, in which water
supply shortages are caused by failure of water management practices or facilities to bridge
normal and abnormal dry periods and equalize the water supply throughout the year. The
incidence of this type of drought can increase because of a change in the amount of rainfall, a
change in societal demands for water (or vulnerability to water shortages), or both.
