<br />.-1 \. , <br /> <br />Havs County Population and Structures Exposed to HAZMA T Incident and <br />Transportation Accident Hazards <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The Hays County Mitigation Planning Committee identified hazard areas along the ill 35 <br />Corridor that would be impacted by a Transportation Accident and related HAZMA T Incident. <br />The Committee referenced Figure 2.12.1 and 2.12.2 that define the areas within one mile; two <br />miles; and five miles from the IH-35 Corridor. The Communities impacted include: the cities <br />of Buda, Hays, Mountain City, Kyle, and San Marcos. The infrastructure impacted includes: <br />IH-35, Texas State University, San Marcos Airport, IH-35 intersections with SH 80, SH 123, <br />SH 21 and Ranch Road 12, and rail and pipelines within the IH-35 corridor. <br /> <br />Based on the 2004-2005 Texas Almanac, Texas ranks #1 (10,749 miles) in miles of track and <br />#2 (7,418,716 carloads) in carloads in the Nation. Tons transferred by rail in Texas in 2000 are: <br /> <br />Chemicals - 40,68] ,860 tons (36.8%) <br />Petroleum - 7,848,888 tons (7.1 %) <br />Other - 61 ,947,583 tons <br />Total - 110,478,331 tons <br /> <br />Based on the Texas Almanac summary, 43.9% of rail cargo in 2000 was hazardous and <br />capable of producing a HAZMA T incident. A HAZMA T incident or related Transportation <br />Accident along the IH-35 Corridor has the potential of impacting a large population (5 cities) <br />and one of the busiest interstate highways in Texas.
