ARTICLE 3 <br />HIRING <br />Section 1. Entrance Examination <br />In order to be eligible for appointment to a beginning position with the San Marcos Fire Department, an <br />applicant must possess, on the date of examination, both of the following certifications: <br />1. Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic (or above) Structure Fire Suppression <br />Certification. <br />2. DSHS Emergency Medical Services Certification EMT -Basic or higher (National Registry, <br />Licensed, or Certification). <br />Section 2. Eligibility List <br />(a) This article shall supersede Section 143.025 of the Texas Local Government Code to allow for more <br />than one eligibility list to be in effect at the same time which shall be utilized upon the exhaustion or <br />expiration of the prior list. <br />(b) Additional points may be awarded only to an applicant for a beginning position with a passing score <br />as follows: <br />1. Two (2) years prior military experience with Honorable Discharge from the United States <br />Armed Forces 5 points; or <br />2. Bachelor's Degree or greater 3 points. <br />*No cumulative points for college hours or military service are allowed such that the single highest <br />number is the maximum total point for any applicant. <br />(c ) The Fire Chief may consider the applicant's failure to remove his /her name from any and all other <br />fire department's eligibility list(s), and provide verification as requested, as a good and sufficient reason <br />to pass over that applicant for initial appointment to a beginning position. <br />Section 3. Hiring Preference <br />Preference in hiring shall be made based on DSHS Emergency Medical Services Certification (National <br />Registry, Licensed, or Certification) level as follows: <br />1. First preference— EMT - Paramedic <br />2. Second preference— EMT - Intermediate <br />EMT -Basic <br />Page 7 <br />
