Sector Two Chapter 2 - Today
The Natural Environment
Geology
Sector Two, along with Sectors One, Three, and Eight, is located in the Edwards Plateau.
This area is hilly and characterized by rocky, shallow soil. These areas sit above the
Balcones Escarpment.
Topography
Land elevations in Sector Two vary from 812 feet above sea level along Ranch Road 12
between Bishop Street and Franklin Drive to 641 feet above sea level near the
intersection of Prospect Street and Columbia Avenue. Sector Two topography is shown
on the Natural Features map on the following page.
Edwards Aquifer Zone
The Edwards Aquifer is the water - bearing underground network of porous and
honeycombed limestone formation of the Edwards Plateau. It is a ma.or source of water
for San Marcos, as well as over 1.5 million other Texans, and is the source of the San
Marcos River. The northwestern and southwestern portions of Sector Two (includes the
Greater Castle Forest Neighborhood and a portion of the Westover and Southwest Hills
neighborhoods) are in the recharge zone. The recharge zone is an area of fractures, caves
and porous limestone that provides a path for water to run from the surface into the
artesian area of the aquifer. The remainder of Sector Two is located in the transition
zone, where faults, fractures, and other geologic features present possible avenues for
recharge of surface water into the aquifer.
Watersheds
A watershed is an area that drains into a river or creek. Sector Two lies in the Purgatory
Creek watershed.
Flood plains
There are no floodways or floodplains that are mapped by the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) located in Sector Two.
Adopted: July 23, 2001 2 -3
