Sector One Chapter 2 - Today
Flood plains
There are floodways and floodplains along both the Purgatory and Willow Springs
creeks. Approximately 38 percent of the land in Sector One is located in identified
floodways or floodplains.
There are 99 acres of the sector located in floodways and stream channels. There are 106
additional acres in the 100 -year floodplain, an area which has a 1% chance of being
inundated by floodwaters in any given year. The 100 -year floodplain has been adopted
by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as the basis for floodplain management
nationwide. There are an additional 36 acres of Sector One in the 500 -year floodplain, an
area which has a 0.2% chance of being inundated by floodwaters in any given year.
Currently in San Marcos, development is prohibited in the floodway, a floodplain permit
is required for any development in the 100 -year floodplain, and floodplain permits are
not required for development in the 500 -year floodplain.
Sector One floodplains are shown on the Natural Features map on the following page.
Adopted: September 13, 2004 2 -4
