BOX 6050 -Aûstin, TX 78702 -(512) 478-RIDE -FAX (512) 478-1110

February 13, 1997

Laura Huffman, Assistant City Manager
City of San Marcos
630 E Hopkins
San Marcos, TX 78666

Dear Ms. Huffman:

I am pleased to provide you with the enclosed report on the activities of the San Marcos Transit
(SMT) system. This is our first full year annual report to the Council on SMT and I think that
you will agree that it has been a productive one with the Chance Heritage streetcars going into
service, the installation of the permanent passenger shelters, the initiation of the ADA
complementary paratransit service (SMT Express), and the debut of the Capital Loop
Commuter. We feel that we have made substantial progress on our objective to build a
comprehensiv.e public transportation network for San Marcos. .

This is not to say that we are there yet. In the upcoming year we will begin planning an
intermodal facility to serve as a central terminal for all passenger transportation services in the
city, from SNIT and our Community Transit operations, to ANfTRAK, Greyhound, and planned
commuter rail operations. More travel training will be introduced to assist senior citizens in
reaching an increased comfort level with the system and to promote that group's usage of public
transportation. On March 1st we will consolidate the management of the Community Transit
service under CARTS and activate computer assisted scheduling. A review will then begin to
improve the coordination of paratransit services in the city.

We enjoy the partnership with the city in promoting improved mobility in San Marcos and wish
to continue building on this relationship in the future. I look forward to seeing you on the 24th
to answer any questions you might have on our activities in your city or the information
contained in this report.

serving the counties of Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Travis & Williamson with community-based regional transportation services.
