<br />- . <br /> <br />5"/6 <br /> <br />CARTS Annual Report <br />page two <br /> <br />Who rides the S¡W:T? <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Ridership breaks do\Vll into five primary categories. Forty-six percent are general public, <br />forty-three percent are school age children, (through high school), three percent are <br />seniors, two percent are persons with disabilities and six percent are other. The model <br />used in the operations plan ranked transportation needs as follows: general public - 46%, <br />youth - 16%, elderly - 7.3% and mobility limited - 2.23%. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />In 1996, CARTS provided transportation for a number of City sponsored events including <br />the "Mardi Gras Festival", "A Taste of Art", the San Marcos "Spurs Night Out" and other <br />Chamber of Commerce functions. In addition, a regular trolley shuttle began in August <br />taking tourists ITom the new Visitor's Center at Tanger Outlet Mall to the do\vntown area <br />for historical tours. <br /> <br />~Vlzat's new for 1997? <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Beginning in March, the transportation program at Community Action Agency of Hays <br />County ""rill be directly operated by CARTS. CARTS will continue to link those <br />residents of the rural areas and smaller cities of Hays and Caldwell counties to <br />.¡ <br />destinations in San Marcos, Austin and San Antonio. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />SMT routes will continue to be analyzed for efficiency and productivity. Routing <br />changes may result as construction of new business, residential, and recreational sites are <br />completed. Alternatives to the current Saturday service schedules will have to be <br />considered in order to optimize resources. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Efforts to attract more riders, particularly the elderly, will be made with a series of <br />meetings, demonstrations, promotions, and travel training programs. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Advertising on the buses and trolleys will be implemented as an additional source of <br />revenue. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Specialized types of services will be explored such as "garage sale shuttles", "shopping <br />shuttles" and tourism oriented transportation. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Planning of an intermoda1 terminal serving the patrons of SMT, our Community Transit <br />operation, Greyhound Bus Lines, .AJ.\1TRAK, and future commuter rail operations will <br />begin. <br />
